Besides, it is visually appealing. However, it also runs into issues such as how to drain an above ground pool

You need to remove the water in the above-ground pool because of health and maintenance reasons. To help you with this issue, we would like to share some tips on how to drain an above ground pool.

But, let’s explore first some insights about why we need to remove the water and how often you have to drain your above-ground pool.

Why do you need to drain water on your above ground floor?

It is not necessary to drain your above-ground pool always. However, there is a need to drain because of the following reasons:

1. Replacing old water

Fresh water in the pool may last for two months or even years. You need to remove the old water and replace it with fresh water.

This is to avoid any bacteria that may grow in the water and causes sickness when you dive in the water.

2. Displacing the pool liner

The pool liner keeps the water in the pool so it will not leak. However, sometimes it cracks and needs replacement.  Before you replace it, you need to drain the water in the above-ground pool.

3. Packing time in winter

The water in the above-ground pool might freeze during winter. Because of this, you need to pack things up as you see the winter approaches. Draining the water in your above-ground pool is indeed necessary when winter comes.

4. Relocating the above-ground pool

If you plan to move your above-ground pool somewhere in your house, there is a need to drain it. Also, do not move the above-ground pool with water because this might damage the pool.

5. Preventing high levels of Cyanuric Acid

Cyanuric acid grows in the water in time. This acid lessens the effectiveness of chlorine in the water.

Hence, there will be increased bacteria or viruses in the water, which causes illness. So, there is a need to drain the water in above ground pool and replace it with fresh water.

6. Avoiding too much total dissolved solids (TDS)

The total dissolved solids (TDS) are inorganic salts and organic matter in the water solution. The number of TDS increases in the water, and when it reaches about 2500 ppm, there will be an imbalance in the water. This may reduce the efficacy of chlorine and causes the growth of bacteria.

How often do you need to drain your above-ground pool?

It is not advisable to drain the water in your above-ground pool always. On the other hand, you have to drain your above-ground pool every 3 to 5 years partially or completely.

Also, if you notice that your pool water is dirty or with bacteria, you need to drain it right away. When winter comes each year, you need to remove the pool water so it will not freeze.

Also, the water becomes dirty when there are many swimmers. Hence, it is better to drain the pool and replace it with fresh water for the next use.

How to Drain an Above Ground Pool in 2 Easy Methods

The draining of your above-ground pool may take an hour or more, depending on the size of the pool. Also, before you start draining the pool, you need to know where the water will go.

You can lead or tap the water hose in the area drain or the catch basin near the location of your pool. This area drain and the catch basin will run into the main sewer of your house to the street sewer.

If your garden is big, you may just release the water there in your garden soil. However, be sure that your pool water does not have many chemicals because this may harm your plants and garden soil.

Once you have known where your water will go, you may decide which of the two following methods you will use:

1. Using Siphon Hose/Garden Hose

A siphon or garden hose is an easy tool to remove the water in the above-ground pool. You may follow the steps below on how to drain the above-ground pool using the siphon hose.

  • Get your siphon hose or garden hose and submerge it in your above-ground pool. The hose will be filled with pool water.
  • Take one end of the hose. Submerge it in the water and siphon it. Lift the end of the hose and get the air out of the hose by shaking it a little bit.
  • Then place your thumb over the end of the hose for a few seconds. And release your thumb over the hose and drop it on the area drain or on the ground. You will see the water is draining out of the end of the hose.

You may also siphon the hose using your mouth. Take the end of the hose. Lift it above the water. And place your lip on the end of the hose and suck it like a straw. You will feel the water flowing at the rim of the hose.

Place the end of the house right away on the ground. If you prefer the area drain, you have to siphon the end of the hose near the area drain to drop the hose immediately and prevent swallowing the water.

2. Using an Electrical Pump

In this method, you need a medium size electrical water pump. Here are the steps below in draining the pool using a pump.

  • Get the intake hose of the pump and submerge it in the above-ground pool. Then, put the outlet hose on the area drain or the ground, whichever you prefer. Be sure that it will not flood the area.
  • Once done, plug the pump. Be sure that your hands are dry to prevent electrocuting.
  • Turn on the pump, and you will see the water coming out of the outlet hose of the pump.
  • Monitor the pumping out of the water in the above-ground pool.
  • Turn off the pump when the water is completely drained.
